9 Fun Tips For Living Longer

If you want to live longer, be happy. Happiness is the key to successful aging, according to Dr. David Lipschitz, a University of Arkansas geriatrician and author of "Breaking the Rules of Aging."

And he has a plan to help you be happy. First you have to follow the nine tips for living longer. To help you follow those tips, the good doctor prescribes travel. Ride bikes in Costa Rica. Eat pasta in Italy. Drink wine in California. He thinks we can actually travel our way to an old age.

Nine tips for living longer:

  1. Be happy.
  2. Love. Nurture an intimate, sexual relationship.
  3. Have a purpose in life. Stay occupied and involved.
  4. Nurture high self-esteem. Feel good about yourself and see the inner beauty in those around you.
  5. Nurture your faith and the capacity to forgive.
  6. Learn to control stress.
  7. Eat right, but don't diet. Being moderately overweight is not a major risk factor for disease.
  8. Exercise--the more the better. Both aerobic and resistance training are important.
  9. Get regular medical checkups. Become an educated consumer of health care.

So where does the travel come in? Travel is part of a healthy lifestyle, especially for seniors, Lipschitz told The Dallas Morning News. Follow his logic: A key factor for longevity is having an intimate relationship. Traveling together is one of the best ways to help that relationship thrive. "Traveling will re-energize a relationship," he told the Dallas paper. "Love is one thing that is needed for long life, and traveling will fuel it."

He has the statistics to prove it: Married men live about a decade longer than unmarried men, while married women live an extra three years on average.

Live longer by having more sex? A new Harris Interactive survey of 911 women and 909 men ages 45 to 65 overwhelmingly concluded that if you want to stay happy as you get older, have more sex. According to the poll results, a whopping 96 percent of mature women who have sex one or more times a week are happy in their relationship. In addition, 66 percent of men and 57 percent of women consider sex to be an important part of their lives.

"The study found that among those mature adults in a relationship, the more active their sex life is, the more likely they are to report being in a happy relationship," said Dr. Drew Pinsky, one of the nation's top relationship experts and host of the nationally syndicated radio talk show, "Loveline."

This seems like a great way to grow old!

In Your 40s? Do This to Lose Weight

When you hit middle-age, the best way to keep the pounds off is to walk. A lot.

A study from the University of Pittsburgh found that when overweight, middle-aged people walked briskly for 30 to 60 minutes a day, they lost 7 pounds in a year and a half. Those who didn't walk gained 7 pounds in that same amount of time, reports USA Today.

The study: 209 adults who were 15 to 29 pounds overweight and had an average age of 45 were divided into three groups:

Group 1: They were given general information about exercise, including a recommendation to exercise daily for 30 minutes.

Group 2: They were told to be physically active for at least 150 minutes a week, which is 30 minutes a day for five days a week. They also took weekly classes to learn more about why and how exercise is important.

Group 3: They were instructed to exercise 300 minutes or more each week, which is about 45 to 60 minutes a day. They also attended behavior classes.

  • Everyone in the study was advised to eat a healthy diet but not restrict their calories.
  • Most people chose walking as their preferred exercise.

The results: Fully 60 percent of the participants from all three groups lost weight, on average 7 pounds. About 40 percent gained weight during the 18-month period, on average 7 pounds. The people who lost weight were the ones who engaged in moderate exercise seven days a week for about 40 minutes a day.

"This is a weight difference of 14 pounds between people who exercised and those who didn't," John Jakicic, director of the University of Pittsburgh's Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center, told USA Today.

It gets better. In a different study, researchers at the University of North Carolina analyzed data over a 15-year period on 5,000 young adults over age 15. Those who walked regularly four or more hours a week were the least likely to gain weight as they age. "Extra walking prevents weight gain at a time of life when many people are gaining," Penny Gordon-Larsen, an assistant professor of nutrition at UNC, told USA Today.

In Your 40s? You'll Find This Depressing

If your life just isn't as happy as it was when you were younger, you're not imagining things. New research from Warwick University in Britain and Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire has concluded that depression is most common among men and women in middle age, specifically their 40s.

Reuters reports that the American and British team who conducted the study, analyzed data on depression, anxiety levels and general mental health for 2 million people in 80 countries and found that human happiness typically follows a U-shaped curve. There is much happiness when we're young, but life turns more difficult in middle age and then the joys of youth rebound in our older years. Call it the roller coaster of happiness. This defies previous research that has shown the sense of psychological well-being typically remains flat throughout life. "In a remarkably regular way throughout the world people slide down a U-shaped level of happiness and mental health throughout their lives," study co-leader Andrew Oswald of Warwick University told Reuters.

Specifically, the team found that the probability of depression builds slowly and then peaks for both men and women when they reach their 40s. This was true in 72 of the 80 countries, from Albania to Zimbabwe, the researchers said. "It happens to men and women, to single and married people, to rich and poor and to those with and without children," Oswald told Reuters. "Nobody knows why we see this consistency." People emerge from the low period once they hit their 50s. This trend was not followed in eight nations, most of which were in the developing world.

Why? Oswald and his colleague, David Blanchflower of Dartmouth, speculate that when people hit their 40s, they realize they won't achieve many of their life goals. There is good news! If we make it until age 70 and are still physically fit, we tend to be as happy and mentally healthy as a 20-year-old. The study findings were published in the journal Social Science & Medicine.

One Vitamin Keeps Weight Off Women?

It's a cruel fact of life that postmenopausal women typically gain weight--even if they keep up with their diet and exercise routine. Now comes word from researchers at Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland that calcium and vitamin D may slow down or even stop that weight gain.

The study: Led by Dr. Bette Caan, the Kaiser team randomly assigned 36,282 postmenopausal women to take either 1,000 milligrams of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D daily or placebo pills. The women, who were participants in the Women's Health Initiative, were all between the ages of 50 and 79.

The results: After three years, the women who took the calcium and vitamin D supplements were five percent less likely to have gained between two and seven pounds and six percent less likely to have gained more than seven pounds, compared with those who took the placebo. In addition, those who took the supplements were more likely to have maintained a stable weight or even lost more than two pounds. The effect persisted throughout the seven years of the study. Interestingly, among the women who had been receiving adequate amounts of calcium when the study started, the calcium and vitamin D supplements had no effect on their weight.

Why? Calcium and vitamin D work together to control the metabolism of fat. In addition, there is some evidence that calcium reduces fatty acid absorption and promotes fat expulsion through the intestines, although studies on this have had mixed results. "Our findings do not alter current dietary recommendations," Caan wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine, noting that cutting calories and boosting activity remain the most important ways to control or lose weight. "Postmenopausal women should continue to be advised to consume 1,200 milligrams per day of calcium as recommended by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences," she added.

No. 1 Problem for Those in Their 40s

If you're 40 and lonely, join the crowd.

An Australian study of 1,300 people over age 18 has shown that more than one-third of adults describe themselves as lonely, and people in their 40s suffer the most, reports the BBC News.

Interesting facts about who is lonely and who is not:

  • People with strong religious beliefs are less likely to be lonely no matter their age. Women are more likely than men to have strong religious beliefs.
  • Loneliness is more common in the unemployed.
  • Being retired does not necessarily lead to loneliness.
  • Poorer people tend be more lonely than those who are wealthier.
  • Knowing a lot of people doesn't guard against loneliness. There is no link between how long someone lives in a community and how lonely he or she feels.

"Understanding what makes people lonely is very important as loneliness can increase the risk of health conditions, such as heart disease and depression and other problems such as domestic violence," study co-author William Lauder, of the University of Dundee, told the BBC News. "One of the most interesting findings of this study is that it challenges the belief that retirement is linked to diminished social contacts and that people get lonelier as they get older."

He emphasized that understanding loneliness is important as it is a very common and potentially health-threatening phenomenon. "Previous research has shown that, health-wise, it carries a similar level of risk to obesity," Lauder told the BBC.

Still, it's important to remember that loneliness isn't always a negative force in life; many choose to live in solitude, Dr. Arthur Cassidy of the Belfast Institute told the BBC News. They may be alone, but they aren't necessarily lonely. "Loneliness is a social construct," Cassidy warns.

There is good news: Those who are the least lonely are in their teens and over 50.

Women: Drink This. No Belly Fat?

A daily serving of soy appears to help postmenopausal women avoid gaining fat around the middle, a common occurrence after menopause, reports Reuters Health of a study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The study: Led by Dr. Cynthia K. Sites, the small study included just 18 women. All were in their 50s and had been menopausal for one to five years. Half were randomly assigned to consume either a soy-based shake or a milk-based shake containing the protein casein once a day for three months. Specifically, they drank half of it at breakfast and the other half at dinner. They were told to substitute the shake for other foods in their diet to prevent weight gain.

The results: Even though both groups showed similar changes in weight and body fat, the women who consumed the soy beverage tended to gain less abdominal fat than those who consumed the milkshake.

Why? Soy contains something called isoflavones, which are structurally similar to estrogen. The soy isoflavones work by binding to estrogen receptors in fat tissue, so it's actually possible they could help regulate body fat metabolism. This is the first study to show that soy protein could impact abdominal fat distribution. Still, the researchers aren't sure why the soy protein affects belly fat in particular.

Reducing excess abdominal fat is an important health measure, since it is linked to higher risks of diabetes and heart disease.

The study findings were reported in the medical journal Fertility and Sterility.
